Irish/Scottish Ceilidh Dance
Saturday, 16 November from 3 to 6 p.m.
at Foyer Culturel Sportif Saint Arbogast
Sign-up
Ready for a fun and exhilarating afternoon?
Ceilidh (“kay-lee”) means a “social gathering” and is a vital part of the Celtic culture in Scotland and Ireland. Everyone can take part, young or old, experienced dancers to beginners and even those with two left feet! A major reason ceilidh dancing is such fun is the rousing music, dancing in a group and round the room. Have no fear – Sheila and Stephen will lead you through each dance/jig/reel. Delicious scones, shortbread, tea, coffee & beer served in the Winstub to sustain your energy!
Welcome to an afternoon of Scottish & Irish ceilidh dancing! A truly authentic experience for beginners and experts – bring a friend for more ‘craic’ (fun), and be sure to make a new friend as you weave your way through a series of jigs and reels. We are very honoured to have Sheila Roberts and Stephen Clandillon, who will provide bilingual explanations of the dances and then call the dances to guide you through each step. We are also very grateful to have live music by the Hueber Brothers, musicians with the groups Excalembour, Black Kelsch and Quatr’ Quart.
This promises to be a great afternoon, sharing a moment of fun & laughter, learning to dance and experiencing a wealth of Scottish & Irish culture.
We are expecting a big turnout, so sign up quickly to avoid disappointment.
If you would rather listen to the music and watch the dance, there is a Winstub where you can sit and chat. We need to keep the dance floor clear, so young children should be accompanied at all times and they are welcome to entertain themselves with colouring and games in the Winstub.
Scones & shortbread will be served with tea and coffee; beer for those with an extra thirst. Water and apple juice will also be available for kids.
Grab some comfortable shoes to dance the afternoon away….a sure way to get your steps in!
Christmas Party & Quiz
Saturday, 7 December 2024 at 7 p.m.
at “Le Social Bar” – Strasbourg
Sign-up
It will soon be the season for our annual Christmas party. Over the last few years, kind members have hosted around 30 people in the largest room in their home, meaning tickets are hard to come by. This year we will gather in a private room at ‘Le Social Bar’, allowing us to welcome up to 60 people.
As in previous years, there will be a theme for our party and quiz. This time around, you will be taken back to the Twenties, a period of economic prosperity and an era of social, artistic and cultural dynamism also known as “The Roaring Twenties”. You can of course wear whatever makes you feel in the 20’s mood and dress up as much as you want; it’s totally up to you!
Join us if you want to be part of what is certain to be a really enjoyable evening with your ESC friends. Food and drinks will be provided at a subsidized price of €20 per member. If you are interested in this event, we recommend you sign-up as rapidly as possible.

Bonfire night
Guy Fawkes, the most famous traitor in British history, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I in the Gunpowder plot of 1606. The anniversary of his arrest is celebrated each year with bonfires (including an effigy of Guy on top) and fireworks.
Burns supper
End of January every year, the ESC honours the life and work of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Guests enjoy a traditional Scottish 3-course menu including the famous McSweens’s haggis. Live musicians on stage for the ceilidh dancing together with the pipers provide musical interludes throughout the evening. A real treat!
Annual barbecue
A golden opportunity to connect with old friends and meet with new people in the relaxed atmosphere of the garden of l’Escale. Good food, games for the kids and mellow jazz contribute in making this such a worthwhile experience. Our annual summer barbecue takes place on Sunday 9 June.
Picnics
The scenic outdoors of the “Citadelle parc” in Strasbourg are the perfect setting for our autumn family picnic. You bring your own food and we provide for the entertainment and an awesome afternoon together.
and much more… like for instance
… Impro nights
Theatrical improvisation, impro, is a good opportunity for live practice of the English language, in a fun games format which can appeal to natives and fluent non-natives, even if they have no experience or ambition in theatre. You will be smoothly guided by Nikki to act in several role-playing exercises with an emphasis on spontaneity. Just be ready to let mental barrier down to tap into your creative side! The group (4 to 8 persons) meets in turn from 7-9 pm at the private homes of the participants. For directions and signing-up for our next two hours session, please contact events@esc-alsace.org.
For all our get-togethers, it is recommended to have a good command
of the English language.
